As we look back on this history of Maharashtra we are reminded of countless sacrifices made by our ancestors and the visionary leadership that has shaped or state into what it is today from the struggle.I would like to unfold a brief history of this day. When we got freedom in 1947, that time the states started demand of reorganisation of the whole country into different parts based on the languages. Justice Fazal Ali Commission was formed in 1953. It is also known as the states reorganisation Commission. As a result the state reorganisation Act 1956 was passed by the parliament.
It need formation of 14 States based on their local languages on 1st November 1956. Unfortunately Mumbai city was separated from Maharashtra. The entire Maharashtra stood against it. S.M.Joshi, KC Thakre, Keshavrao Jedhe,P. k. Atre, Annabhau Sathe, Amar Sheikh, Shripad Dange, Madhu dandvate became the leader of United Maharashtra movement commonly known as samyukt Maharashtra Samiti. The demanded Mumbai as a capital city of United Maharashtra and started protest all over the state for all the Marathi speaking regions should be included in one state. 106 Martyrs poor killed in open firing of the police during peaceful protest near fountain.
As a result Bombay state was finally dissolved with formation of Maharashtra in Gujarat States. Mumbai became part of United Maharashtra on 1st May 1960.
